A blood test is the most direct way to see how your blood sugar, cholesterol, kidneys or thyroid are doing on the inside, often before any symptom shows up. This guide explains what each common test measures, how to prepare and what to do with the results.

What does each test measure?

  • Complete blood count (CBC): counts your red and white cells and your platelets. It helps detect anemia, infections and other blood problems (MedlinePlus).
  • Blood chemistry panel: glucose, kidney and liver function and electrolytes, depending on the panel.
  • Fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c: glucose captures a single moment, while A1c reflects roughly the last two to three months (MedlinePlus).
  • Lipid panel: total cholesterol, LDL ("bad"), HDL ("good") and triglycerides.
  • Thyroid tests: mainly TSH, which helps show whether the thyroid is overactive or underactive.

The medical team decides which tests to order based on your age, symptoms and history, so you don't pay for tests you don't need.

Do I need to fast?

It depends on the test. Fasting glucose calls for 8 to 12 hours without food; others, such as the A1c or CBC, don't. When fasting is required you can drink plain water, and you should generally keep taking your medications unless told otherwise (MedlinePlus). If you're not sure whether to fast, message us before you come.

How is the sample taken?

It is done at the clinic and takes a few minutes: a needle in the arm and one or more tubes, depending on the tests. If needles make you dizzy, let us know and you can lie down. Drink water the day before; being well hydrated makes the vein easier to find.

When do I get my results?

The timeframe depends on each test, and we tell you when we draw the sample. When the results arrive, we explain them in Spanish, without jargon, so you understand what each number means and what comes next.

What if something comes back abnormal?

A value outside the range isn't always a disease: it can be due to fasting, a medication or a recent infection. Sometimes repeating the test is enough; other times it confirms something that needs treatment, such as diabetes, high cholesterol or hypothyroidism. In that case we set up a chronic condition management plan with follow-up, or take a closer look at your thyroid.

How often should I get blood work?

There is no single answer. A healthy young person may need it only occasionally; someone with diabetes usually checks the A1c every three to six months. If you have a family history of diabetes or heart problems, or it has been years since your last checkup, a sensible start is a general panel and deciding from there.
