Tuberculosis (TB) Test

Many jobs, schools, volunteer programs and applications require a current tuberculosis result. The test shows whether you have ever been exposed to the bacteria, even if you feel perfectly fine.

What kinds of tests are there?

According to the CDC, there are two:

• Skin test (PPD or TST): a small amount of fluid is injected under the skin of the forearm. It takes two visits: the placement and the reading 48 to 72 hours later.
• Blood test (IGRA): done with a blood sample in a single visit. It's the better choice for anyone vaccinated with BCG in childhood, since that shot can make the skin test read positive when it isn't.

Ask your employer or school which one they accept before you come in.

How does the skin test work?

1. We place the fluid in your forearm with a very fine needle; a small bump forms and then fades.
2. Don't cover it, scratch it or put creams on it.
3. Come back between 48 and 72 hours later for the reading. If you miss that window, the test has to be repeated.
4. We give you the documented result for your paperwork.

What does a positive result mean?

That you've been exposed to the bacteria, not necessarily that you are sick or contagious. The next step is a chest X-ray and an evaluation to tell latent infection, which isn't contagious, from active tuberculosis. Both are treatable. We guide you through each step.

When to suspect active tuberculosis?

A cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, fever, night sweats or unexplained weight loss. In that case, don't wait for a work requirement: get checked as soon as possible.
