Subdermal Implant Removal

The subdermal implant (Nexplanon, Implanon or Jadelle) is a small rod placed under the skin of the arm that protects against pregnancy for 3 to 5 years. When it expires, when you want to get pregnant, or when the side effects are no longer worth it, it needs to be removed with a simple procedure. When should the implant be removed?

• It expired: Nexplanon lasts 3 years and Jadelle up to 5. After that date it's no longer reliable.
• You want to get pregnant: fertility returns quickly, usually within the first month after removal.
• Bothersome side effects: irregular or prolonged bleeding, headaches, mood changes, acne or weight gain.
• Switching methods: you prefer pills, the shot, an IUD or another method.
• Medical reasons: for example, if you develop severe high blood pressure or clotting problems.

You don't have to wait until it expires: it can be removed at any time.

What is the procedure like?

1. You walk in, check in, and the medical staff examines your arm and locates the implant.
2. The area is cleaned and local anesthesia is applied; you only feel a small pinch.
3. A tiny incision is made at the tip of the implant and it's removed with forceps.
4. It's closed with adhesive strips (stitches are rarely needed) and a pressure bandage is applied.
5. You get care instructions and, if you wish, leave with your new birth control method.

Removal takes 10 to 20 minutes in total. If the implant is deep or hard to locate, we tell you honestly and guide you on the next step.

Care after removal

• Keep the pressure bandage on for 24 hours to prevent bruising
• Keep the area clean and dry for the first 2 to 3 days
• You can do your normal activities; avoid lifting heavy things with that arm the first day
• A small bruise or tenderness for a week is normal
• Come to the clinic if there's heavy bleeding, pus, fever or increasing pain

What comes after the implant?

If you don't want to get pregnant, remember that protection ends the same day it's removed. We can place a new implant through the same incision, give you the shot or prescribe pills. If you're trying for a baby, use the visit for a women's health checkup and preparation blood tests.
